If you are interested in the most accurate information available on merengue típico (perico ripiao), accordion, tambora, or güira, this is the site for you. We’ve just finished redesigning it, and now you can submit information on groups, events, and more yourself! Just be sure to include as many details as possible, so we can verify the data before posting it.
This site began as http://www.Merengue-Ripiao.com in 2001. Originally a collaboration between accordionist David David and ethnomusicologist Sydney Hutchinson, the goals were to provide information to fans of the music and publicity for típico musicians at a time in which almost nothing on this genre was available online . While the situation has changed somewhat since the site first went up in 2002, many of the sites that today exist to promote merengue típico are monolingual and/or commercial in nature. Hutchinson, who maintains the site today, believes there is still a need for a bilingual site like this one, whose goals are primarily educational. Please help us to make more and better information about típico available to all who are interested, Send us what YOU want to see on the site.
We are currently looking for a “perico ripiao” group to perform for us on 2/27/2015 and I would love for you to have a list of the groups that perform in the Eastern Shore area (New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Maryland, DC, Virgiania). I can’t seem to find anyone. Thanks.
